Are you still copying and pasting your product descriptions?

This week I want to talk to you about the importance of writing unique product descriptions for all of the products on your website.

Wait, what?

I hate to break it to you, but copying and pasting descriptions from product to product, or from your Etsy shop to your website is NOT going to cut it with Google.

And, if you're a stockist selling someone else's products, neither will pasting their descriptions on your website either.

Why?

Google LOVES fresh, unique content and really DOESN'T LOVE duplicated or copied content...

To the extent that if it finds lots of pages (or website's) that include descriptions which have been copied from somewhere else, it will choose it's favourite source and IGNORE the rest!

...and when I say ignore, what I mean is it will choose not to index the page, and when a page isn't indexed, it CAN'T APPEAR IN SEARCH RESULTS!!!..Which means potential customers have no way of finding you.

How can I fix this?

If you're guilty of overusing Ctrl+V across your site my first tip would be:

Don't Panic!

Instead, focus on prioritising the products that absolutely have to be indexed. You're bestsellers, your seasonal stock and your high margin products, and start updating these first with fresh, original content.

Once you've worked through those, you can move on to any less important products on your site.

Hopefully this post has been helpful rather than panic-inducing, but if you do find yourself in a flap, or not sure how to make the changes  - feel free to get in touch.

Happy optimising!
